How to care for your jewellery

How to care for your jewellery

Over the years we’ve picked up a trick or two and have some tips to pass on that will help you keep your jewellery looking fine. Fine jewellery is designed to last for generations and with some basic care you can make sure yours does.

Regular jewellery cleaning will keep gemstones sparkling and could show up issues which may otherwise go unnoticed. One trick we’ve learned is to clean jewellery in a plastic bowl lined with a cloth, this will protect delicate items and prevent any small pieces disappearing down the plughole.

To clean gemstones such as diamonds, rubies, sapphires and amethysts use a little fairy liquid and warm water. Leave to soak in warm water for 5-10 minutes to soften any dirt, then apply some fairy liquid to a soft toothbrush and gently brush the jewellery, particularly behind gemstones. Rinse in lukewarm water then dip into surgical spirit to remove any soap residue.
Emeralds are softer so take extra care, clean as above but do not rinse in surgical spirit afterwards.

Water or cleaning liquids can damage porous stones such as pearls or turquoise. The best way to keep pearls looking good is to wear them as the oils from your skin will naturally return their lustre. Treat them well by wearing regularly and if extra cleaning is necessary polish with a soft chamois leather.

Be careful if using ultrasonic cleaners as these could damage fragile gemstones such as emeralds.

Also some common sense dos & don’ts of jewellery care:

Don’t wear jewellery (especially diamond rings) when doing manual work. Diamonds are one of the hardest materials but can still be chipped or shattered by a sharp blow.

Do apply perfumes, deodorants and body lotions before you put on your jewellery.

Do take off your jewellery before swimming in heated pools or hot tubs, or when using household cleaners. Chlorine can damage gemstones and gold over time, particularly at higher temperatures so bear this in mind if you swim regularly.

Do store jewellery with gemstones in individual pouches to avoid scratching.

And finally, do make sure you bring your jewellery in every year for a check up. We offer a free annual clean and check up service to our customers to make sure that gemstones and their settings stay in optimum condition.
